The Beloved Community
Beloved Community Statement of Values
A Beloved Community can begin in conflict and suffering and end in reconciliation, justice, and forgiveness. Its heart is always love and each one of its chambers has room for diverse community members as we find ways of entering into new and liberating relationships with each other.
The foundations of such a community are: being fully heard and seen, trusting and being trusted, and, finally, freely giving and getting support.
In a Beloved Community, individuals mirror the best parts of each other and themselves, reflecting what a more enlightened future might look like: in a Beloved Community one always wants only the best for others and is fully committed to the empowerment of all community members.
Learning Through Community Engagement
During the Civil Rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King spoke about the Beloved Community as a goal to be achieved through non-violent social change. The Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.
We believe that the Beloved Community thrives when it lives by its core foundational values. For the 3rd Beloved Community Conference, we collectively decided to join our partners’ calls for Equity, Inclusion, and Activism. Let’s begin by being fully heard and seen…

Los valores de la amada comunidad
Una amada comunidad puede empezar en el conflicto y sufrimiento y terminar en la reconciliación, justicia, y el perdón. Su corazón siempre es amor y cada una de sus cámaras tiene espacio para los miembros diversos de la comunidad conforme encontramos caminos para establecer relaciones nuevas y liberadoras entre todos.
Las fundaciones de tal comunidad son: ser completamente escuchado y visto, confiando y ser confiado, y finalmente, dando libremente y recibiendo apoyo.
En una comunidad amada, los individuos reflejan la mejor parte de cada uno y de ellos mismos, reflejando e informando lo que podría ser un futuro: en una comunidad amada uno siempre quiere lo mejor para otros y está totalmente comprometido a empoderar a todos los miembros de la comunidad.
Aprendiendo a través de la participación comunitaria
Durante el movimiento de los derechos civiles, el Dr. Martin Luther King describió en sus discursos la amada comunidad como una meta para alcanzar a través del cambio social no violento. En las palabras del Dr. King, “la amada comunidad es una visión global en la cual toda la gente puede compartir la riqueza del mundo. En la amada comunidad, pobreza, hambruna, y la falta de vivienda no serán toleradas porque los estándares internacionales de decencia humana no lo permitirán. El racismo y todas las formas de discriminación, fanatismo y prejuicios serán remplazados por un espíritu inclusivo de hermandad…”
Creemos que la amada comunidad prospera cuando vive con sus propios valores fundamentales. Para la 3ª conferencia comunitaria, decidimos colaborar con la llamada de equidad, inclusión, y activismo de nuestras organizaciones hermanas. Empecemos por ser completamente escuchadas/os y vistos/as…
